We are a group of sporty norwegians with experiences from several hikes in Norway. Together we bring our dogs, our expertice and lots of laughter and smiles. We are eager to share this journey, in this spectacular nature, with you.
Congratulation! You did it!
Last, but not least, we will walk in beautiful mountain terrain over places like Vakkerlifjell, Oskampen and Vangstulkampen. And then,- ta ta 🎶🎵 - we reach the destination: Gjendesheim in Jotunheimen! Here you will be surrounded by high mountains, - perhaps some of them still have snow on the peaks. From here it is possible to go futher into Jotuheimen, or take a bus back home to Oslo.
The trail follows old grass covered roads and we are now entering higher areas. As with many of the lakes already passed, you can fish in most of the lakes if you want to. The trail goes through Fåberg Vestfjell with mountain forest and small farms. If you use the DNT cabin Skjellbreidhytta (920 moh), you may also use the small rowing boat on the Skjellbreidvatnet. After this, the path goes up on what we call "snaufjellet", it is so high up that no big trees grow there. One can visit the mountain Prestekjerringa (1060 moh) to get an even better view over all of southern Norway! We will walk in the fotsteps of "budeier" and pass over Nordre Suluhøgda (1122 moh).
The trail is now following the same path as the skiiers use in the winter, pass Glåmhaugen (714 moh) and Kvitingen and Stormyrene. This area can be wet. There is an idyllic picnic site where the stream enters a lake close to Hågårtjernet. The trail is now in a pine- and spruce forest, with some great view areas inbetween. Then we will enter an area with houses and farms, before we again walk into the "wild nature". We will pass Lauvhøgda (722 moh) and if you walk up there, you will be able to walk up a watch-tower and get a spectacular view of the area with Mjøsa, Norefjell and Valdres. More forest, mountains (e.g. Kråkhugukampen 952 moh) and marsh are ahead, and more lakes to take a swim in, like e.g. Elgsjøen.
The path will now lead you throug an open, lush area with some old forest houses and past the Avalsjødammen. We will se the remains of an old hunter-castle, a water dam, an old "finneplass" and a "sætergrend". We might also see horses grazing and if we want to, it is possible to sleep in an old forest cabin with earth floor and a wood burning oven in the middle of the room. We will pass by small mountains, and for those who are interested, you can walk up and get a great view of Gaustadtoppen, Norefjell and Vikefjell. A part of this trail is also a part of the Pilgrimage trail. The path further is a mix of a small foot path and a horse-and-carriage road. There will be several places to take a bath along the path.
Walk on the path along lakes, old farms, forest and small hills. Some of the hills, like Rudskampen at 585 meters are worth a visit. The path continues past Ingelsrudsetra, Breidsortungen and Store Snellingen. Here you will pass remains dating back to the iron age. The path is now an old "horse and wagon" road and you might see cows on it. This section of the Jotunheimen trail ends by Snellinghøgda, and if you feel for walking to the top, you will have great view of Romeriksåsen.
Through the popular Nordmarka, via Skjærsjøelven, Kamphaug gård, Fløyta, Gruveåsen and the naturereserve Karlshaugreservatet. Then you will wander in soft landscape and open pine forest and pass by small mountains with beautiful view of Romeriksåsen and northern Nordmarka. The last part is passing a cafe and Hakadal Verk and cultural areas before the lake Store Øyungen, and ending at cozy Bekkestua.
